The reconstruction and remodelling contract for Gumel General Hospital, valued at N1.3 billion, has been immediately suspended by Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State.
The governor made the call after an unannounced late-night visit of the hospital, during which he checked the efficiency and care of key areas like the isolation center, the General Out-Patient Department, the male and female wards, and the facility as a whole.
The governor demanded the project’s immediate halt after expressing his displeasure with the contractor’s performance.
The progress made thus far, according to Governor Namadi, is unacceptable and does not correspond to the scope of the contract that the state government granted.
He claimed that the government had high hopes for the project’s completion, which included a thorough refurbishment of the hospital, but that the actual implementation had fallen short.
“It is unacceptable how the work is progressing. The hospital’s repair and remodelling did not live up to the agreed-upon quality, notwithstanding our approval of the project. So, while we discuss this matter with the contractor, I have ordered the project to be halted,” the governor stated.
His order was for the Ministry of Health to suspend the contractor and safeguard public funds by making sure the project is finished according to the approved specifications.
On December 17, 2025, Yasmeen Automobile Nigeria Limited was granted the renovation contract with a value of about N1.3 billion. The timetable for completion is eight months. But the governor claimed that even after seven months of effort, the execution level was still significantly lower than expected.
Strict adherence to specifications, quality standards, and timely delivery are non-negotiable, he warned firms managing government contracts, reiterating that his administration will not tolerate poor-quality projects.
While at Ringim General Hospital, Governor Namadi reviewed the renovations that were already underway and gave the contractor specific instructions to fix the problems he found and move the project forward faster.
