Rufus Omeire, the senatorial aspirant for Imo West representing the Action Peoples Party in the upcoming 2027 election, has articulated reasons for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to proclaim a state of urgency over gully erosion in the South-East area.
He disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Omeire sounded the alarm that the erosion has devastated neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, residences, agricultural grounds, and public facilities in the southeastern area.
He asserted that erosion represented a significant danger to lives, livelihoods, and sustainable development in the Southeast region, necessitating immediate federal government action.
I implore President Tinubu to proclaim a state of emergency over gully erosion in the South-East, especially in the Orlu Senatorial Zone and Ideato Federal Constituency. The catastrophic erosion afflicting our towns persists in obliterating roads, residences, agricultural grounds, and public facilities, presenting a grave danger to lives, livelihoods, and sustainable progress. Omeire, a former Nigerian legislator, asserted that immediate government action is essential to tackle this ecological catastrophe.
His request arises following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent authorisation for the development of the 150-kilometer Oba–Nnewi–Uga–Akokwa–Arondizuogu–Okigwe Road after prolonged neglect.
Nghusa indicates that Ikenga Ugochinyere, a House of Representatives member for the Ideato Federal Constituency, responded on Thursday to Tinubu’s administration’s sanction to initiate the construction of the Oba-Nnewi to Okigwe road.
