The agreement will enable direct scheduled flights between Canada and the most populated nation in Africa, according to the Nigerian government.
Numerous airlines are now able to run scheduled flight services between the two nations thanks to the deal.
An important milestone in bilateral aviation ties, commerce, tourism, and economic cooperation has been reached with the signing of an enlarged Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Nigeria, which opens the door for direct scheduled flights between the two nations.
It is anticipated that the agreement will improve connectivity, cut down on travel time and logistics expenses, and promote the two countries’ commercial, educational, and cultural connections.
According to the agreement, each country’s chosen airlines will get 10 weekly all-cargo flights and 14 weekly passenger flights.
Cargo airlines are able to transport goods between two foreign nations as part of services that originate or terminate in their home country thanks to the Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights granted for all-cargo operations.
In addition to reducing travel and logistics expenses, the extended framework is anticipated to increase tourism, trade, investment, business travel, and cultural interactions.
As of March 31, 2026, more than 25,000 Nigerians have valid study licenses in Canada. The agreement is anticipated to enhance educational exchanges and interpersonal relationships.
He said on X, “The agreement represents its first major expansion in more than a decade, expanding the bilateral air services framework originally negotiated in 2014 and formally signed in March 2025.”
